Buying Printer Cartridge: Things to Consider

Cartridge Type

Whenever you want to buy 'laser printer toner cartridge' online or offline, you will have three choices: original, recycled and compatible

Original printer cartridge: These printer cartridges are made by your printer maker like; hp, canon, Lexmark, Brother, canon, Samsung, Xerox, dell etc. these printer cartridges also known as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) cartridge and genuine toner cartridge.

Recycled printer cartridge: These cartridges are made from empty used original printer cartridges. Empty original cartridges are collected, selected, disassembled, cleaned, replaced worn-out parts, refilled, reassembled and finally tested for its quality. These cartridges are also known as remanufactured toner cartridge, refilled toner cartridge, recharged toner cartridge and refurbished toner cartridge. Most parts of the original cartridges retain their quality after first use. If handled properly, almost all the parts can be reused except the toner or developer which must be refilled. Now these days, remanufacturing printer cartridge is a full blown industry with the ability to recycle any printer cartridge, which will give you same quality and page yield. There are company like Static Control component , which dedicates solely on research and development to make parts for the industry.
Some OEM company (like Xerox's 'it's compatible' program)  remanufactures and recycles other OEM (hp, Apple, brother & Lexmark) toner cartridges.

Compatible printer cartridge: These cartridges are not made by the printer manufacturer. They are designed bit differently than the original cartridge to avoid copyright infringement. Sometimes its done cleverly so that the cartridge fits in several printers of different model and brand. These 'compatible new' cartridges contain new components.
Some original printer cartridges are interchangeable. If you have a hp laserjet 4000/4050 printer, canon cartridge EP 52 will suite your printer. HP 27X and canon EP 52 cartridges are interchangeable and 'compatible OEM'.

Page Yield

Page yield is the total number of pages a printer cartridge can print in its life cycle at 5% coverage. 5% coverage' is more or less a standard letter. Many printer have standard (a) and high (x) yield cartridges. You will find 'a' or 'x' next to the code of the printer cartridge. High yield cartridge prints more than the standard only because it has more toner in it, so you pay bit more but cost less per page. It is important factor to consider while buying a cartridge, because it gives an estimate of 'cost per page'. It is important also to understand that your 'actual page count' will vary according to your document type and style.
In June 2004, ISO set the standard (ISO/IEC.19752) for determining toner cartridge page yield for monochrome laser printers.

Quality

While print quality of remanufactured toner cartridge for monochrome laser printer is undoubtedly equivalent to original toner cartridge, remanufactured colour laser toner cartridge lack of it. This is due to rapid change of technology. If your printer model is less than six months old, it is better to buy original first time. By then remanufacturing industry will come up with the technology to match the quality for that specific printer.

Quantity

You can reduce your unit cost by buying in bulk. But make sure, you use them within one year period. Because, almost all supplier will give you one year warrantee from the date of purchase. Just write down the date of cartridge installed on a sticker and stick it on the body of the cartridge, that way you will be able to find how long it lasted and how many you will need in one year period.

Delivery

It is important to find the cost and time of delivery. It might be free delivery, but can be delivered sometime next week. Almost all the time if you buy bulk, you will save delivery cost.

Return Policy

All supplier will give you at least one year warrantee for their faulty or wrong product and replace it without charge, but if you order a wrong product you may be charged for restocking and delivery cost. It is better to order according to printer brand and model and you will find it on the top or front of the printer.

Environmental Benefit

All OEM company have their recycle program, but they will collect your empty cartridge and transform them into other plastic products. On the other hand, a remanufacturer will recycle the plastic core several times until it breaks down and then supply it to plastic recycle industry to make plastic products.
If you care about the environment, then choose remanufactured toner cartridge.

Price

Finally all come down to the price of the product itself. Original printer cartridge will be always expensive and remanufactured or recycled cartridge will be the cheapest and compatible will be somewhere in the middle. But you should always consider all the factors above while buying your laser printer toner cartridge.
